FarmHouseUrban Remodel - Week 2

We are actually much farther along than this, but the demo is going faster than my current blogging capability. I don't want to skip over anything, so here's the next phase. Basically, the demo continues... (incidentally, isn't our contractor tidy?!)

Old living room fireplace. Deciding what to I want it to look like. Mantle or beam for a rustic + traditional feel? Flat front and more modern? What type of material for the surround? Decisions!

This is the master bedroom before it was demo'd.  It's really small, so we're opening the enclosed porch to make a bigger space.  The master bathroom will take up about half of the current bedroom's floor space, so the room will still be small, but it will have a fireplace and a private deck.

Here is a never-before-seen-and-never-to-be-seen-again photo of our current master bathroom. You can understand why I never wanted to show it. There aren't even any electrical outlets! I've had to dry my hair in the bedroom for the past five years!

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!

Do you know what this is?  It's our building permit!!! Mother @#$%er what an ordeal that was! Two years after starting on our house plans, we are finally under construction!

For those new to the blog, or for those who have forgotten (since it's been 2+ years!), I started this blog solely to document the remodeling of our house. Once we fell into the bureaucratic crevasse aka the Marin County permitting process, I needed to supplement with posts about other things (art, architecture, furniture, chothes, food, etc), which I have thoroughly enjoyed and will continue to do. But I couldn't be more excited to finally be able to share from beginning to end, what this blog was created for.

It's been two weeks since we began, so let me get you all up to speed... DEMO. The house is completely gutted. The only design decision made so far has been selecting windows. All framing is contingent on getting the exact window specifications. Our contractor and I went on a field trip to a window showroom whereI learned a ton! That will be in another post, but for now here is week one in review. Be sure to check out the video tour below!

Kitchen fireplace will be taken out since we don't use it. In its place (and the space behind)  will be a family room 'nook'.

This is the view of the kitchen from the other direction. It looks into the dining room. The wall separating the two rooms will be taken out.

Two wiindows will be added to the wall on each side of the range.

This was a funky open bar area (they were the rage here in Nor Cal in the 50's apparantly). It will be enclosed and half will be a pantry and the other half will be a powder room (entered from other side).

This is the living room. There will be french doors going out to a larger deck.

This is the dining room. The far wall windows will be made bigger and french doors to a juliet balcony will be added.

exciting news and the coolest new place for all things vintage!

I've been sooo excited to tell you all about this, and now the time has come!!!

A few months ago I was contacted by a person I had never met about a new business she and her husband (and a host of others) were creating.  She described it as a marketplace for all things vintage - cars, jewelry, clothing, homes (yes homes!) and of course, home furnishings.  They were selecting "Style Makers" who each had a certain look and style, to showcase their wares under individual storefronts on the website.  At first, I didn't think it sounded like the right fit - I pictured a giant virtual flea market - or worse - a garage sale!  After a few phone meetings, and emails I soon realized that was not the case.  Far from it.  Second Shout Out was created to for the hip consumer who has an appreciation for the finer things that have timeless beauty and permanence. 

The site just went live, but the official launch is not until mid-September.
